PUC-Rio - Brazil

The Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) is a private non-profit Catholic University, founded in 1940 with the objective of developing knowledge based on humanistic values. The university now has 20,000 students who come from a variety of religious, ethnic and social backgrounds. PUC-Rio is located in Gávea, a charming neighborhood near the forest and beaches of the Zona Sul area of Rio de Janeiro. Its campus is beautifully situated within a tropical forest, surrounded by lush trees and with a small stream running through it. Visitors and students can often see small monkeys and squirrels jumping among the trees.

Conexiones-Ecuador offers you the opportunity to study Spanish or Quichua in the Andean city of Cuenca, a World Heritage Site boasting pre-colonial ruins and Spanish colonial architecture. Tucked between four rushing rivers, Cuenca’s lush environment and cultural vibrancy welcomes visitors with many opportunities to explore the Andes mountains and Ecuadorian culture. Conexiones students live with host families for an immersion experience, attend classes at the Universidad de Cuenca, and participate in field trips and other excursions around the city and the surrounding region. A unique element of Conexiones is the combination of immersion and support.

We will be traveling to Valencia, Spain, one of students' preferred destinations to study abroad due to its unique mixture of traditional Mediterranean and urban culture. You will soak up the city's cultural richness through its world-renowned festivities (Las Fallas) and cuisine (paella!), enjoy its privileged climate and mile-long beaches, and witness Spanish culture, history and society as you wander by its different monuments and historic buildings, join the lively nightlife, or relax with a bike ride, walk, or tapas picnic in one of its numerous gardens.

We will travel to the Italian island of Sardinia to learn about Sardinian singing and contemporary cultural practices of this southern Italian island. We will spend one week in a small rural village in the mountains, and one week in a bustling metropolitan city on the island's southern tip. Activities will include learning to sing traditional Sardinian songs, ethnographic writing assignments, and participating in daily community life. Instruction in the Sardinian language and presentations on aspects of contemporary Sardinian life and culture will also be offered.

This exciting class combines the history and customs of food, olive oil, and wine in Perugia and the surrounding region, with food writing and travel. We’ll start by exploring a small portion of the history of Italian food and wine, with a specific focus on Perugia and the wider Umbrian area. Through readings, discussions, participant observation, conversations and interviews with local food producers, tour operators and writers, we will learn how the world is interconnected via our traditions and culture around food.
